AERIAL VIEWS OF LAGO COLONY  &  LAGO REFINERY
These photos were submitted by Homer Waits.  They were taken in the 1940's.

The first photo is of Colorado Point from the air, the long black objects below Colorado Point on the right of the photograph are the U S Army barracks converted to apartments after the war to help ease the housing shortage in Lago Colony right after the war.

This photo takes in the Colony and refinery as well as Baby Beach and the Big Lagoon.  Note this photo was taken before the New Esso Club was built.

Another view of the Colony, refinery and Little Lagoon and the Big Lagoon.
A good view from the air of the Colony with the hospital in the lower right of the photo.
Another great view of the Colony looking South.  Note the tankers waiting off shore for a berth.

A view of the then  refinery and tank farm, you can see from this photo that there were a lot of tanks, they are the black and white things you see in the photo, for those who have never seen a tank farm.  The Cat Cracker stands tall over the refinery.

Almost the same shot as the one above.  These photographs give you an idea of the size of the Lago Refinery and the tank farm. The space in the center of the photograph that is very light colored is the Golf Course.  The parking and Club House is the black area on the left side, center of the photograph.
Closer shots of the refinery and tank farm. Lago Heights can be seen in the bottom of the photo.
And still closer as the plane fly's low along the edge of the refinery.
San Nicholas harbor with the reef docks and the finger piers.  This photo was not taken from a little plane, note the engine exhaust.
Gasoline loading dock as seen from a tanker as it approaches the dock.  The structure on the dock is used to hoist the large hoses that connect the tanker to the loading pipes.  A rubber hose is used to absorb the movement of the tanker
Tankers at birth at the Reef Dock.  The tug in the foreground is the "Colorado Point".

In the photo below you can see the little rim way that was used by the little airplanes.  The plane from which these photos were taken will land there. It does not look like much of a runway. The planes came in over the road flying towards the sea and the prevailing wind and touched down just as they cleared the road. It is also the runway where the DC-3 landed during the blackout years of World War II.
