THE GREEN HOUSE
I have always thought of it as "The Green House" probably because it was painted a shade of green.  It sat on stilts in the big lagoon and was accessible by a dock-walkway from the shore.  There was a gate which was locked at the beginning of the walkway and not until it was abandoned was the gate left open and the house was in ruin that I ever went into the house.  At the time I went the floors were rotted out and you had to be very careful not to fall through the floor.
Below is one of the few photos I have of the house, this comes from Reg Kennerty's scrapbook.  The photo in Reg's scrapbook has a boat on the beach with the house in the background, I cut the boat out of the photo to show the house.
 
Today, Oct. 2, 2010 Larry put out a question about the house for me and this is the replies I have received.
Danny, that Cabana belonged to the Veld Family of Veld Stores in San Nicholas.  I don't remember the Father's Name but the two children were Art and Bepe.

Dan - That picture Reg sent you shows The Green Shack that was built in the early 1940s by Art Veldt with the help of my uncle Frank Reynolds who worked for Seybolt.  Art also had a fishing boat, I believe it was the NA 99

Hi Dan...haven't thought about that house in years.   The Meakers owned it at one time...not the first owner as I remember but I do remember, spending a weekend night there one time with Sharon who was a classmate of mine.  There was raft that had to be pulled by a cable to get there as I remember.  Anyway Sharon's email was ###.com that last time I talked with her which has been quite a long time ago. Sue (Mingus) Cone.
Hi Dan!  I am VERY familiar with the Beach House in the Colony Big Lagoon .  My parents and I and my brother, John (or Johnny) went there every Sunday when we were little kids with the Veld family.    It belonged  to Mr. & Mrs. Aart in't Veld and they owned and ran a popular grocery store in the Village called the In't Veld Store, or for short, the "Veld Store"!  Their home with built above the store, so going to work was just going down stairs every day for them.  My parents were  Mr. & Mrs. Henk Hagendoorn (my maiden name!).  They also played "Bridge" together taking turns at each other's homes for the game playing.  We lived in bungalow 469 across from old "Slim's Garage".  Slim would always tell me Bible Stories.  How I loved that black man!!
Every Sunday our two families would meet at the Beach House and spend the day.  Mr. Veld had a wonderful big boat anchored to the Veach hours, and he would take all of us outside of the inlet and go for a long ride in the ocean every Sunday!!  Their children were Aartie and Beppie in't Veld and I often brought Beppie to the movies in the old Esso Club that had no roof over it, remember?  Our families would spend the whole day at the Beach House on Sundays, and Aartie & Beppie in't Veld and my brother Johnny Hagendoorn and me would dive or jump off the porch edges and swim and get back up top and do it again!  LOVED being there as kids!!  It was a wonderful time in our lives!!  Hope this helps!  Has brought back happy memories for me!                                       Love, Evie Hagendoorn van Deutekom!!

I remember that house. It belonged to someone who had what seemed to me (little girl) to be a rather large cruising motorboat with visible fishing tackle attached. I thought it belonged to Capt. Rogers (of Rogers Beach). Maybe not. However when I was young my parents to me to a party there. There were other young Lago kids there. I remember my parents having a very good time. I also remember wandering around the "porch", very bored with the whole occasion.

Hi, Dan. I'm not sure , but I think this is what I remember being called the Scout cabana. I remember spending a night in it once with several other members of the Boy Scout troop. I think Mr. Opdjyke was the Scoutmaster, from whom we got the key to the cabana. This would have probably been in 1947. I think there were maybe 5 or 6 of us in residence that night - can't remember them all, but I'm pretty sure Tom Tucker, Murray Jennings, and Warren Carrol were in the group. You'll probably get more reliable information from some others of my general vintage who spent a lot more time on the Rock than I did.

I do not know why but this house has always fascinated me, I think maybe because I would have liked to live in a house over the water where you could jump out of bed and dive into the sea.
