THERE WAS A LOOPHOLE IN THE VACATION POLICY IN 1951 AND A NUMBER OF US WERE ABLE TO COME HOME FOR CHRISTMAS AT COMPANY EXPENSE. THIS IS A SHOT OF THE NEW TERMINAL AS THE PLANE WAS ON ITS TAKE-OFF ROLL. NOTE THE LARGE NUMBER OF PARENTS WATCHING THE PLANE TAKING OFF. THAT FLIGHT WAS FULL OF LAGO KIDS AND NEEDLESS TO SAY WE HAD A WONDERFUL TIME.

So, you don't remember it raining in Aruba? These photos were taken in the 1940's after a big rain. The houses are #402 & #407, Martha & Coy Walker lived in 402 and the Hellwigs lived in 407. The water did not stand around for long.
In the late 1940's and early 1950's the Grace Line began to make the rounds of the islands. This is a picture of one departing Oranjestad. The man in the center wearing a coat is Mr. Horigan, his son Michael is standing in front of him, facing the camera. Click on the photo to see a blow up of Mr. Horigan.
This is a shot from the bow deck of the Esso Raligh taken in the early 1950's. The ship had a special deck on the forward section which was built to carry automobiles from the States to Aruba.
Taken in the late 1940's when we were just getting serious about spear fishing. The big man, left, is Paul Hermenson, Joe Carroll than a Jr. in High School and Lyle Redfoot. Joe says: "We would typically go in above the dog graves yard and get out at the Esso Club. Usually took about four hours. However, we were pikers compared to the ones that came after us, (Tres Dunlap and his buddies).
This is a shot taken from the dock at the big lagoon in the early 1970's. Not the Cat Cracker is gone and the new HDS facilities are in operation.

THERE WAS A VERY ACTIVE HAM RADIO CLUB IN ARUBA IN THE '50's AND 60's. THEY WERE REALLY SOUGH AFTER BY OTHER HAMS THROUGHOUT THE WORLD AS A CONTACT. WHEN SUCH A CONTACT WAS MADE, THE HAM WOULD SEND THE OTHER HAM ONE OF THEIR CARS. THIS IS THE CARD THAT JOE'S FATHER, "EARL" CARROLL SENT OUT.
